La inesperada llegada del covid con el cierre de teatros y aislamiento de la gente trastocó todas nuestras vidas. La gala correspondientes a la 74 edición de los Premios Tony anunciada para el 20 de Junio de 2020, se aplazó indefinidamente. El 15 de Octubre de 2020 el actor James Monroe Iglehart dio a conocer los nombres de los nominados a las diferentes categorías estrenados en el último ejercicio y las votaciones tuvieron lugar en Marzo de 2021.
En mayo de 2021 se anunció que la entrega de los premios sería el 26 de Septiembre de 2021, aunque en un formato distinto de los años anteriores. Estaría dividida en dos partes, una gala de dos horas presentada por Audra MacDonald para entregar los Premios individuales más importantes, seguida de otra gala presentada por Leslie Odom, jr titulada “Broadway’s back” en la que se interpretaron algunos temas de musicales clásicos y tres números de los tres nominados a mejor musical.
