Cameron MackIntosh con 8 años entró en un teatro al que llevó su tía para ver el musical “SALAD DAYS” y desde ese momento aquel niño supo que de mayor quería ser productor teatral. Comenzó trabajando siendo aún adolescente en el Teatro Royal Drury Lane como tramoyista y a los 22 años estableció su productora en Londres, subiendo a los escenarios una reposición de “ANYTHING GOES” (1969) de Cole Porter, que no duró más de dos semanas en cartel, pero el camino ya estaba abierto.

Conoció a Stephen Sondheim al producir una obra benéfica titulada “SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM“ (1976), que reunía canciones para el cine y el teatro de Sondheim. Luego vendrían “OLIVER” (1977), “”MY FAIR LADY” (1978), “OKLAHOMA” (1979) y muchas otras hasta que se alió con Andrew Lloyd Webber para dar salida a su proyecto más atrevido, “CATS” (1981), al que seguirían juntos en “SONG AND DANCE” (1982) que luego llevarían de Londres llevó a Broadway y con el que Bernadette Peters ganaría el Tony a mejor actriz en un musical.

Un día cayó en manos de MackIntosh una casette de unos autores que habían hecho un musical en París titulado “LOS MISERABLES”. Cameron MackIntosh se entusiasmó con la idea y contactó con Schöberg & Boublil, los autores, para reescribir el musical, que estrenaron en 1985 en el Barbican de Londres. con la Royal Shakespeare Company y el resto… ya es historia.
